Dr. Giuliano Bensi
Giuliano is presently the Head of the Infection Models Unit at GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines, Siena, Italy, and he is a PhD student supervisor in the context of the GSK Vaccines Academy. He is also responsible for a GSK laboratory in Messina, where members of his Unit follow vaccine research programs in collaboration with the local University. Giuliano was formerly trained in Molecular Biology, spending fellowship periods at the Max-Plank Institute (MPI) for Molecular Genetics in Berlin and at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. For the last fifteen years, initially as a Chiron and then as a Novartis employee, (now GSK) he has been working on different vaccine projects against both viral pathogens, such as HPV and bacterial pathogens, such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus and pathogenic Escherichia coli, developing appropriate animal models of infection, as well as identifying and functionally characterizing novel vaccine candidates.
